The marriage lasted only a year.įrom 1885 to 1890, Grace Carpenter Davis lived with her parents in Ukiah painting, teaching and rendering illustrations for magazines such as Cosmopolitan and Overland Monthly. While in San Francisco, she met and eloped with a man fifteen years her senior named William Davis, upsetting her parents and ending her formal studies. At sixteen, she executed an award-winning, full length, life sized self-portrait in crayon. At fourteen years of age, Grace was sent to attend the recently-established San Francisco School of Design, an art school which emphasized painting from nature rather than from memory or by copying existing works. Her mother was one of the first white school teachers educating Pomo children and was a commercial portrait photographer in Ukiah, California her father was a skilled panoramic and landscape photographer who chronicled early Mendocino County frontier enterprises such as logging, shipping and railroading. Grace Carpenter was born in Potter Valley, California. She painted the first, "National Thorn", after her marriage in 1891, and the last in 1935. She was nationally known during her lifetime for a numbered series of more than 684 portraits of the local Pomo Indians. He visited Venice and Rome but returned to Dresden in 1744. He returned from his travels in 1741 and was appointed court painter to Frederick-Augustus II, Elector of Saxony, who sent him to Italy in 1743 to study. He travelled in Germany from 1734 and may have visited the Netherlands, the source of his artistic inspiration. From 1732 he used the name 'Dietricy' to sign his paintings. In 1730 Thiele presented his pupil to Frederick-Augustus I, Elector of Saxony, as a prodigy Frederick-Augustus appointed him court painter and entrusted him to his minister Heinrich, Graf von Brehl, for whom he worked on some decorative paintings. In 1728 they travelled to Arnstadt to paint landscapes for stage sets. He received his first training from his father, Johann Georg Dietrich (1684-1752), a court painter at Weimar, and was sent to Dresden at the age of 13 to study under the landscape painter Johann Alexander Thiele (1685-1752). His first landscape paintings are sombre, coloured with dark browns, greens, and pale blues. His earliest known work, Lane near a Small Town is believed to have been painted around 1864. Unlike some of his fellow students who suffered financial hardships, Sisley received an allowance from his father?until 1870, after which time he became increasingly poor. Consequently, Sisley and his friends initially had few opportunities to exhibit or sell their work. This approach, innovative at the time, resulted in paintings more colorful and more broadly painted than the public was accustomed to seeing. Together they would paint landscapes en plein air (in the open air) in order to realistically capture the transient effects of sunlight. Beginning in 1862 he studied at the atelier of Swiss artist Marc-Charles-Gabriel Gleyre, where he became acquainted with Fr?d?ric Bazille, Claude Monet, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. At the age of 18, Sisley was sent to London to study for a career in business, but he abandoned it after four years and returned to Paris. Sisley was born in Paris to affluent English parents William Sisley was in the silk business, and his mother Felicia Sell was a cultivated music connoisseur. Sisley is recognized as perhaps the most consistent of the Impressionists, never deviating into figure painting or finding that the movement did not fulfill his artistic needs.
